Risk comes first: a guide to leverage and volatility

Understand exposure, spread, and the limits of a stop order before following the market.

Before interpreting a currency chart, understand the risks of the product you are researching. Holding a currency, exchanging money, and trading a leveraged derivative are different activities.

Leverage magnifies exposure

Leverage allows exposure larger than the amount committed. It magnifies both gains and losses. Margin requirements can change and positions can be closed by a provider when collateral is insufficient.

Costs and execution matter

The spread is the difference between bid and ask prices. Commissions, financing costs, slippage, and conversion charges may also affect an outcome. Quoted prices are not a guarantee that an order will execute at that level.

Orders have limits

A stop order may execute at a different price when markets move quickly or gap. Product terms differ by provider and jurisdiction; read the actual contract and risk disclosures.
